Prep’s Mountain Biking Team Rides to a 3-Peat as State Champs!

November 2nd, 2026

The Sundevil Varsity Mountain Biking team’s season might have been cut short after rain and flooding mucked up track conditions– the final race in October was first scheduled for Socorro, then Pajarito, then canceled altogether - but their performance over this 2026-2027 school year was the best in the state for the third year in a row. Congratulations to Prep’s THREE-PEAT State Champion Mountain Biking Team! Prep has now defended and captured back-to-back-to-back high school state championships.

The program competes through the New Mexico Interscholastic Cycling League, which is affiliated with National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). The credit once again goes to a solid team effort from Prep riders (21 high school and 12 middle school), coaches, families and many volunteers. Their dedication, consistency and hard work made this possible.

Team captains Jane (’27), Sebastián “Sebí” (’27) and Logan (’28) helped set the tone for a group that continues to push each other, support each other and raise the level of the entire program. They have led with toughness, composure, sportsmanship and grace and have consistently modeled the kind of competitors and teammates Prep wants this program to produce.

Jane, Sebi, Logan, Miles V. (’29) and Liam (’29) were especially important in keeping Prep at the top of the team standings throughout the season, delivering consistency at the highest levels of racing to give the team the points it needed week after week.

  • Jane completed an incredible high school racing career as a three-time team captain, five-time varsity letter winner, and four-time varsity girls state champion.
  • Sebí had a breakout season and finished second overall in varsity boys.
  • Fellow captain Logan finished third overall.
  • In JV1 Boys, Miles V. won the division championship, and Liam ('29) finished fourth overall.
  • In JV1 Girls, Aspen (’29) finished fifth.
  • In JV2 Girls, Ada (’30) finished fourth, and Adelyn (’28) finished 10th.
  • In the deep JV2 Boys group, Rijken (’29) won the division championship, followed by Tanner (’29) in third, Leo (’27) in fourth, Miles R. (’29) in sixth, TJ (’29) in eighth, and Alex (’29) in 10th.
  • In JV3 Boys, William (’30) finished third overall, and Miles H. (’29) finished ninth.
  • First-year and developmental riders also had an outstanding season. In JV4 Boys, Jackson (’30) finished third overall. On the girls side, Jocelyn (’29) won the JV4 championship, Harmony (’30) finished second, and Katie (’29) finished third.

While middle-school riders do not count toward the high school team score, they are an important part of the program and its future. Sandia Prep has historically allowed middle school athletes to earn a varsity letter if they can train and contribute at the high school level and compete at the top of the Eighth-Grade A category.

  • Julia (’31) won the Eighth-Grade A championship and will become the third Sandia Prep rider to earn a varsity letter as a middle-schooler.
  • In Eighth-Grade B Boys, Grayson (’31) won the championship, with Aram (’31) finishing second. On the girls side, Ellie (’31) won the Eighth-Grade B championship, and Nairi (’32) finished second overall in Seventh-Grade Girls. Liam D. (’33) finished third overall in Sixth-Grade Boys.

The league also includes fifth-grade categories, and two potential future Prep student-athletes had excellent seasons. Ani (’34) finished third in Fifth-Grade Girls, and Carson (’34) finished fifth in Fifth-Grade Boys.

Varsity letters require performance, attendance and positive team contribution throughout the season. This year, the team will have more varsity letter winners than ever before, reflecting both the growth of the program and the commitment of the riders.

The results are impressive, but what stands out most is the size and strength of the group behind them. This is a large group of athletes who pushed themselves and each other all season, and the results are a reflection of that work. Winning a third consecutive state team championship is an incredible accomplishment, and everyone involved in this program should be proud of what they helped build.
