Meeting the Individual Needs of Students

Sandia Prep's Center for Learning Excellence (CFLE) provides a consistent, supportive environment where students build confidence, improve academic habits, and grow into independent, capable learners.

Our Center for Learning Excellence offers academic services tailored to meet the diverse demands and styles of students with a diagnosed learning disability or medical condition significantly impacting academic performance. In partnership with families and teachers, our Learning Specialists help students strengthen time management skills, organization, task initiation, and self-advocacy. Our goal is for our students to succeed at our honors-level curriculum and gain confidence for life.

“Through all the hard papers and tests I learned that there are so many people at Prep who are there to support in times of need.”
– Cal, Class of 2019

The Center for Learning Excellence offers:

  • Accommodation Plans

  • Bookshare (accessible e-books)

  • The CFLE Classroom

  • Requests for ACT/SAT Standardized Test Accommodations

Accommodation Plans

Students with a diagnosed learning disability or medical condition that significantly impacts their academic performance are entitled to an accommodation plan. Accommodation plans outline adjustments to the environment, assignments, or expectations to create more equitable learning experiences for students. Specific accommodations could include, but are not limited to, extended time on tests, quizzes, or assignments; preferential seating; allowance of technology for note-taking; or more frequent contact with a teacher. Parents are involved in the creation and update of the plans, and the plans are distributed at the beginning of each academic year to teachers with a briefing from Prep's CFLE Director and School Psychologist & Director of Wellness. Please note: No modification of the curriculum is made, but accommodations allow students to be successful with our curriculum.

For specific information on the accommodations process at Sandia Prep, please contact our Admission Office at admission@sandiaprep.org or 505.338.3007.

Bookshare (accessible e-books)

All Sandia Prep students on accommodation plans have access to Bookshare, the world's largest online library of accessible e-books. In addition to a school Bookshare account, students also have individual Bookshare accounts to access any reading materials for both school and independent reading purposes.

The CFLE Classroom

The CFLE Classroom is reserved for students with a diagnosed learning need who have significant academic habit weaknesses and require additional learning support, as determined by the school’s learning specialists and/or the school psychologist and school counselor.

Offered as one class period on a student’s schedule, the CFLE Classroom is by administrative placement only. The student must already be on an accommodation plan at Prep or already have a scheduled neuropsychological or psycho-educational evaluation.

The CFLE Classroom:

  • Supports students in improving their executive functioning skills (does not provide specialized instruction)
  • Teaches students essential study skills strategies for a high degree of retention of information.
  • Teaches students effective time-management strategies for prioritizing, initiating, and completing tasks.
  • Teaches students how to advocate for their learning through various methods of communication with their teachers.
  • Assists students in utilizing the best organizational strategies for better access to school resources.
  • Assists students in tracking and completing school assignments.
  • Assists the students in meeting course expectations.
  • Communicates with the students’ advisors and teachers about all aspects of the student’s learning.

Requests for ACT/SAT Standardized Test Accommodations

At the request of the parents/guardians of students on school accommodations, the CFLE Learning Specialists petition for ACT and SAT accommodations by providing necessary documentation that includes current accommodation plans and diagnostic evaluation reports. Requests for standardized testing accommodations for eligible students are made in the 8th grade before the spring PSAT 8 is administered.

Please note: A learning disability or medical condition does not guarantee test accommodations on the ACT or SAT, and such accommodations are granted at the discretion of the test publishers.
