Community Outreach Projects Aim to Brighten Holidays
December 16th, 2022
Sandia Prep students, faculty, staff, and families have been busy in recent weeks with community service projects to brighten the holidays for those in need.
Prep partnered with PB&J Family Services to sponsor six families. Each grade level created a sign-up, and families came through in a big way by contributing clothing, books, toys, diapers, wipes, toiletries, blankets, bedding, cleaning supplies, gas and gift cards, and much more.
In fact, there were so many donations, PB&J had to send a second van to collect them all!
Since 1972, PB&J's mission has been to assist children to develop to their full potential in nurturing families within a supportive community.
The Seventh-Grade Leadership team collected hundreds of pounds of toiletries, school supplies, clothes, and toys for the 2,000+ children in the Albuquerque Public School system who are unhoused or living without secure housing. All donations were for the APS McKinney-Vento program, which has teams of workers who bring the items directly to the families in need.
Prep’s Pitchfork Cafe in the Briley Commons held its first Holiday Pop-Up Market. During the arts and crafts market, the cafe was open for business, with proceeds benefiting The Barrett Foundation.
DesignLab students were among the vendors who created and sold crafts, with 100 percent of their proceeds going to the Barrett Foundation as well. The foundation provides shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness and housing programs for individuals and families.
The Sandia Prep Dance Company held a free show of The Nutcracker Ballet for Special Olympics New Mexico and the Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network. Attendees were able to watch the show and then enjoy cookies and photos with the dancers afterward.
The production featured more than 200 costumes and 80 cast members from all three Prep dance teams, students from every grade level, faculty members, and parents.
Through student-led projects, Prep students discover the joy of service to others while making a positive impact in the community.
