Prep Hosts Second Adaptive Sports Event
April 24th, 2025
For the second year in a row, Sandia Prep partnered with the University of New Mexico P.E. Department, Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, and a local educator and advocate to host an Adaptive Sports event on campus to help raise awareness of inclusivity for people with disabilities.
In Prep’s West Gym and on its fields, middle school students -- guided by the eighth-grade leadership group -- enjoyed Sitting Volleyball, Goalball, Adaptive Bocce Ball, Blindfolded Guided Walk and Run (with a sighted buddy), and Adapted Bowling and had lunch to connect with students from Carrie Tingley Hospital.
Students said the day provided both leadership opportunities and learning experiences.
“It’s been really eye-opening to see how people live their everyday lives,” eighth-grader Thalia Kelin ’29 told the Albuquerque Journal.
“It’s really fun to do activities and see how kids with disabilities here on campus engage with other students and people,” added eight-grader Ananda McCall ’29.
Assistant Head of School for Middle School Susi Hochrein told the Journal that she hopes to expand the event. “I’m really hoping that eventually other schools can come be a part of this effort and that it can truly be a greater community service,” she said.
