Favorite Book
Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood, Atwood's unflinching portrait of a woman reckoning with memory, identity, and the slow erosion of unlived possibility resonates deeply with my work alongside adolescents --- that window of development where potential is still wide open, but not indefinitely. I'm drawn to the Kunstlerroman tradition, novels that trace the psychological and creative unfolding of an artist from childhood into selfhood, because they ask the same questions I sit with in my counseling practice: how do we become who we are, and what do we do with what we are given? As stated in the novel, "Potential has a shelf life." Atwood's message isn't pessimistic so much as it's a quiet nudge: now matters.
What's your secret skill or something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I can be unexpectedly witty. Once people get to know me, they find I use humor with intention -- whether to defuse tension, spark a laugh, or gently challenge an assumption. It's actually closely tied to my interest in creativity. Wit, at its best form is intellectual playfulness. It disrupts the expected, opens up new angles, and invites people to think differently.
How do you like to spend your downtime?
In my downtime, I cherish time with my household -- my spouse, daughter, parents -- along with our three dogs, and a small herd of cows. I love caring for our shared space and the simple joy of keeping each other company. We're also big sports fans, especially when it comes to cheering on our favorite WNBA players and catching Unrivaled!
What do you enjoy most about Sandia Prep?
The legacy. Sandia Prep has a long history, and what strikes me is that it doesn't stay frozen in it-- the school evolves while maintaining a clear throughline of values and community. I see something similar in my counseling work: each individual has their own unfolding story, shaped by what came before them and where they're headed. Being part of an institution that honors both continuity and growth feels like exactly the right fit.
