Spanish Model U.N. Students Receive Accolades
March 2nd, 2023
Sandia Prep's Spanish 5 and Heritage Spanish 3 students recently participated in the Spanish Model U.N. conference in Albuquerque, along with 135 students from seven schools.
The conference provides an opportunity for students of Spanish to develop and practice skills for debate, analysis, discussion, conflict resolution, and negotiation among its participants, following the model applied by the United Nations. The event also creates an awareness of the U.N.'s vital and humanitarian mission in the world, with a focus on Spanish-speaking countries.
Conference participants discussed three topics: water shortage, the war between Ukraine and Russia, and extremism. Students spent six weeks researching and preparing for the conference, and their performance during the event was impressive, according to Prep's Modern Languages Department Chair Claudio Perez.
Abigail Hanosh '23, Dylan Holtrop '24, Olivia Chavez '25, Hiilani Alderete '23, and Cedar McCall '24 were selected as the best delegates for their Crisis Committees.
Mya Lathon '23 and Modern Language Teacher Dr. Juliana Todescan served as moderators this year.
