To the Sandia Prep Community,
At Sandia Prep, reflection is not just a pause from progress - it’s what allows progress to take hold. As we look back on the 2024-2025 school year, what stands out most is a community willing to embrace change thoughtfully, align around shared strategic priorities, and strengthen the relationships that make Prep such a meaningful place to learn and grow. This was a year of momentum and transition, and with it came greater clarity about who we are and where we are headed. One of the most exciting areas of growth this year was the continued development of the Impact Lab. Created to connect learning to real-world challenges, design thinking, and community partnership, the Impact Lab is helping students discover purpose while building empathy, resilience, and a sense of responsibility beyond themselves. We are deeply grateful for the E.E. Ford Foundation matching grant, which galvanized community support and allowed this work to grow more quickly and more boldly than we imagined. We were also thrilled to welcome Molly Rennie as Director of the Impact Lab.
Her leadership and vision have helped the program take root in powerful ways - from a student advisory board shaping partnerships and projects to the library becoming a true hub for collaboration, conversation, and community connection.
The 2024-2025 also marked several important leadership transitions that strengthen our ability to support students and families well. We welcomed Pablo Torres as Director of College Counseling, Terry Darnell as Director of Athletics, and Alicia Marcell as Director of Development. Each brings experience, energy, along with a shared commitment to supporting students through strong relationships and thoughtful guidance. Together, they reflect continued investment in programs and people who help students thrive, both now and as they
prepare for life beyond Prep. Generosity continues to be a defining strength of the Sandia Prep community. Through time, talent, and philanthropic support, our families, alumni, faculty, and friends make it possible for our students to learn, grow, and lead with purpose. This culture of giving sustains our work today and ensures that future generations will experience transformative education that defines this community. As we look ahead, we do so with gratitude and optimism. Thank you for walking alongside us, believing in our mission, and supporting Sandia Prep and our students in so many meaningful ways.
With gratitude,
Sandia Prep Administration

Letting Success Speak
Avery Sims ’27
“Work in silence. Let your success make the noise.”– Anonymous
Sandia Prep junior Avery Sims lives by that philosophy. Quiet, focused, and deeply committed to growth, he has steadily uncovered his strengths and passions during his time on campus – often without seeking the spotlight.
Still, his achievements frequently earn recognition in Head of School Heather B. Mock’s Weekly Wrap-Up, particularly for his success in guitar. Sims first picked up the instrument in sixth grade. “One year for Christmas, I got a guitar, and when I was registering for Prep, I saw that guitar was one of the classes that they offered, so I decided to give it a try, and now it's one of my favorite hobbies,” he explains.
Under the guidance of instructor Paul Nielsen, Sims’ dedication paid off with selection to All-State Guitar -- a milestone that reflects both talent and persistence.
A native of Acoma Pueblo, Sims came to Prep from Montessori of the Rio Grande. Over the years, he has discovered a wide range of interests, including basketball, tennis, the Outdoor Leadership Program, Digital Film, and math. “I believe Prep has some of the best math teachers I’ve ever had, as they really enjoyed their subject, especially Mr. (Dan) Kelly. He has really helped me excel in math.”
“I enjoy having all the different opportunities to explore and to try new things, and make new friends,” Sims says. “I’ve always been interested in the outdoors, and during middle school, when the OLP took us on places like backpacking trips or the (Great) Sand Dunes (in Colorado), I knew that I wanted to give it a try, and now it’s one of my favorite things to do.”
Sims describes himself as low-key but diligent. “I pay very good attention, though I am very quiet in class. I get my work done in a timely manner,” he shares -- a calm confidence that mirrors how he approaches his work and relationships.
Spirit Week remains one of his favorite traditions at Prep, especially Lion and Unicorn Day and Color Day. “Everybody comes together to do something extraordinary,” he says.
Like many students, Sims continues to refine his time-management skills. With no free periods and afternoons filled with basketball practice and activities, his schedule is full -- yet he consistently rises to the challenge and finds balance.
Looking ahead to college, Sims is considering kinesiology and sports wellness or education. Sports medicine appeals to him because he wants to help athletes recover from injuries, while education is a natural option “because my whole family has been a teacher of some sort.”
Sims’ roots remain central to who he is. His family is from Acoma Pueblo. “I am passionate about my culture and history,” he says.
In his free time, Sims enjoys playing basketball, playing guitar, building Legos, and spending time with family and friends over board games -- simple moments that reflect the thoughtful, grounded student he has become.

“I owe a great deal to my teachers, who worked hard to make learning both fun and engaging. They didn't just teach me the material; they inspired me to think critically and creatively, and for that, I am deeply grateful.”
– Julian ’25

Curiosity in Motion
Amelia Gazic ’29
From engineering and outdoor leadership to volleyball and a middle school musical, ninth-grader Amelia Gazic ’29 has eagerly explored the wide range of opportunities available at Sandia Prep.
She appreciates many aspects of life at Prep. “I love the campus, community, and my friends,” she says. “I also enjoy the range of activities, clubs, and academic opportunities.”
In eighth grade, this Unicorn took on the double challenge of playing both school and club volleyball. Balancing a demanding practice schedule with frequent travel required her to develop strong time-management skills. “I’d say the biggest day-to-day challenges were finding time to complete the more tedious homework assignments that take a lot of time or research, and also fitting in time for daily activities like talking to family and friends and getting enough sleep each day,” she adds.
Some of her favorite middle school classes at Prep included Experiential Environmental Engineering for Social Impact, along with math and science. One standout moment came during Spanish class, when she suddenly realized she understood everything her teacher was saying. She also fondly remembers laughing with friends on yearbook day and celebrating a win in the final volleyball game of the season.
As a freshman, Gazic made a conscious effort to step outside her comfort zone -- and was rewarded for it. “I did not expect to enjoy Intro to Computer Programming as much as I now do, and I am so grateful I went out on a limb and tried it,” she says. “I'd tell new freshmen that it is good to try different topics, even if you do not think you're going to like them.”
One thing that did meet her expectations was Biology 1 with Ernest Polansky, a teacher known for both his rigor and his popularity. “I love Biology, because the topics are very interesting, immersive, and well-explained, and Mr. Polansky is an amazing teacher,” she shares.
Photo 1 has also been a highlight for Gazic, “because it is a fun and artistic break from my academic classes,” she adds.
Gazic describes herself as “an engaged and curious student.” “I like learning about things that I’m interested in and really diving deep into every little detail.” At the same time, she’s working to embrace subjects she finds more challenging “so that I can learn and overcome challenges and boredom.”
While academics are important to her, Gazic has come to realize that relationships have played an equally meaningful role in her experience. “I think that it is not only the academics and campus, but especially the other people that have really been extremely pivotal for me as a student and as a person,” she says.
An Albuquerque native, Gazic attended Sunset Mesa Elementary School before coming to Prep, influenced in part by her sister Angelica ’27’s positive experience and her belief that Prep’s academics would be a strong fit.
Looking ahead, Gazic hopes to pursue a STEM field, most likely engineering. “I think that aerospace, chemical, mechanical, and environmental, as well as many other types sound appealing to me,” she says. “I believe these jobs could be a great fit for me because of my ways of thinking, problem-solving, and the fact that I have enjoyed engineering-related tasks since I was younger.”
“I do hope that it is something that I look forward to doing every day as well as something that I know is making a positive impact on the world, even if that impact is small.”
Outside the classroom, Gazic enjoys reading, writing, pottery, journaling, and spending time with her sister Angelica, her mom, and her cat, Marcy.
“I realize how lucky I am to even have the opportunity to be a student at a school like Sandia Prep,” she adds. “I am so lucky and fortunate to have the life that I’ve had, and I try to remember that and let it guide me in the way I live my life and treat others.
