Description
Sandia Preparatory School seeks a dynamic person to join the Office of College Counseling. This position is responsible for helping students navigate the college admissions process and develop academic plans of study, preparing them for their post-secondary education goals. The role is crucial in helping students achieve success and providing guidance as they make important decisions about their future. This role works with students and families on an individual level to ensure they have the necessary resources to make informed decisions about their academic and career goals. The Office of College Counseling is responsible for liaising with university admissions representatives, writing letters of recommendation, and providing college counseling and standardized testing support to ensure that students understand the college admission process and apply to appropriate colleges and universities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide individualized college counseling to students in one-on-one, family, and large group settings
Assist students and families in the college application process
Guide students in development of their college application list
Assist in the hosting activities of university admissions representatives who visit Prep’s campus each fall and spring
Write counselor recommendation letters for a cohort of 12th-grade students and assist in the development of communication materials (print and web) for the Office of College Counseling
Provide information on financial aid and scholarship opportunities
Provide information on summer programs and athletic opportunities
Assist in organizing and conducting college-related workshops and seminars
Assist our lead testing coordinator and Director of College Counseling to organize and proctor on-campus standardized testing (i.e. College Board & ACT exams)
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of college admission trends and policies
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student success
Monitor and track students' progress toward college enrollment goals
Support students in writing college essays and preparing for interviews
Represent Sandia Prep at local and national admissions conferences
Participate in the life of the school by offering an activity and serving as a grade-level advisor and/or sponsor
Additionally, we welcome applicants who have an interest and academic background to teach a course
The Expertise You Bring:
Bachelor’s degree in History, English, Humanities, Art History, Counseling, Education, or related field
Experience working in a secondary school, university, or college counseling setting
Knowledge of college admissions processes and requirements
Strong organizational and event planning skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Proficiency in using college search software (i.e., Scoir or Naviance)
Comfort with public speaking and group presentations
Familiarity with financial aid and scholarship processes
Commitment to the academic and personal growth of students
Experience working with high school or college-aged students
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to build rapport and trust with students, parents, and staff
Knowledge of career development theories and practices
Understanding of academic advising and college application procedures
Ability to work in a collaborative environment
Commitment to confidentiality and ethical college counseling practices
