SummerPrep is known for its astonishing stage productions and impressive music program. Now, it’s your turn to join the program! Acting Master Class

Campers will prepare monologues and dialogues for performing before family members on the second Thursday of each session. Emphasis will be on developing quality role characterization and vocals. Campers will explore a range of theater topics, including audition preparation, musical performance, and the impact of Shakespeare on modern theater.

Black Box Theater: Alice in Wonderland

Impetuous Alice is about to turn thirteen, but she's not sure she's ready to grow up. Accompanied by her older self, Alyse, Alice embarks on a journey underground after a mysterious and familiar White Rabbit crosses their path. In this new telling of Lewis Carroll's classic story, Alice and Alyse navigate the wacky landscape of Wonderland, eventually helping Alice accept the idea of becoming a young adult. This production is set in a smaller venue, seating 80 people.‭

Black Box Theater: Rapunzel Uncut

The story of Rapunzel told by dueling narrators, with a misunderstood witch, an off-pitch Rapunzel, and an unimaginably stupid Prince. ‬This production is set in a smaller venue, seating 80 people.‭

Costume Design and Construction

Learn to sew! Let your imagination go wild as you learn this important theater skill. You’ll make costumes for our SummerPrep plays and for yourself, using a wide array of tools and designs.

Guitar

Guitar Beginning Skills
Discover the basics of guitar playing! You’ll learn at least five fun songs (both classical and rock-n-roll) and perform in a concert on the last day of the session. More advanced students can learn an additional three songs and more advanced guitar techniques that include picking and elaborate chord changes.

Guitar 2: A Further Exploration
Intermediate techniques include learning more chords, strumming patterns, note reading, and playing popular songs.

Piano

Beginning Piano
John Legend. Alicia Keys. Elton John. These are just a few pop stars who are expert pianists. Whether you dream of being a big star or just want to learn one of the world’s most popular instruments, this is your opportunity! You’ll learn the basics of reading music, the correct position at the piano, and more while learning everything from classical to popular songs.

Continuing Piano
More advanced piano students learn complex technical and interpretation skills, musical theory, and more while expanding their repertoire.

Playwriting & Acting NEW!

Campers will write original monologues and dialogues as well as write, memorize, and produce an original group script to perform in class in front of an audience. Students develop vocal and physical skills and experience many facets of live theater with a unique character they create from imagination and then bring them to life on stage.

Stage Combat

Theater Main Stage Production: Wizard of Oz

Somewhere, over the rainbow, or … right here at SummerPrep! Join us for The Wizard of Oz musical, featuring Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, Lion, and all of your favorite characters as they sing and dance their way along the Yellow Brick Road. Will the Great and Powerful Oz grant their wishes? Will Dorothy ever get back home to Kansas? All will be answered! 

This beloved musical is directed and choreographed by professional dancer and Sandia Prep Performing Arts Chair Louis Giannini and is under the musical direction of Laurie Finnegan. Both are dedicated to helping children build strong character, self-esteem, confidence, and discipline as the class participates in all aspects of the production, including singing, dancing, choreography, costume design, and set production. Expand your talents and skills that will last a lifetime by being a part of this remarkable theater production.

Theater Main Stage Production: Disney's Frozen JR.

A story of true love and acceptance between sisters, Disney's Frozen JR. expands upon the emotional relationship and journey between Princesses Anna and Elsa. When faced with danger, the two discover their hidden potential and the powerful bond of sisterhood. With a cast of beloved characters and loaded with magic, adventure, and plenty of humor, Disney's Frozen JR. is sure to thaw even the coldest heart!

Theater Makeup

Have you ever wanted to create a zombie? Or wondered how artists make an old person look young, or a young person look old? Explore the world of theater makeup and learn how masterful makeup helps bring characters to life!
Grades: 5 - 8

Theater Tech

Learn how to bring a theatrical production to life. Follow design plans to paint large-scale scenery and acquire faux painting techniques. Explore prop-making using various sculptural materials and creative problem-solving skills. You never know what props a show might call for, so the materials we use can be anything under the sun! You’ll also have the opportunity to participate as crew for the SummerPrep Theater Main Stage Production to learn more about the behind-the-scenes activities that make up a theater production.

Uke-A-Palooza!

Uke-A-Palooza! (for Younger Campers)
Learn to play ukulele and sing-along! A perfect introduction to an instrument for the budding musician.

Uke-A-Palooza! (for Older Campers)
Did you know the ukulele was the first instrument Billie Eilish learned when she was six? Now it’s your turn! The ukulele is easier to learn than the guitar. Once you know three simple chords, you can play hundreds of ukulele songs. It’s small, easy to handle, inexpensive, and fun! Let’s get strumming!
