Dane Gallegos '23 Joins New Mexico United U-23 Team
May 23rd, 2022
Rising senior Dane Gallegos ’23 has landed a coveted spot on the New Mexico United U-23 soccer team. The midfielder made the fourth round of team member additions to the U-23 roster for the USL. The USL Championships men’s soccer league is the largest pre-professional league in North America.
Dane was the eighth-signed athlete when the New Mexico United Academy opened in 2021 as a youth program acting as a feeder for the USL and the major league. Players like Dane compete in official USL games and still retain their college eligibility. Dane’s Academy experience, and now his U-23 participation, position him well for a shot at the pro level.
New Mexico United president/owner Peter Trevisani is excited about creating such opportunities for local talent like Dane. And award-winning Sandia Prep soccer coach Tommy Smith had nothing but praise to shower on the star player: “Dane is an exceptional talent. He possesses the desire, athleticism, and competitiveness to excel at an elite level. It was a pleasure coaching Dane his freshman and sophomore seasons. His type of talent doesn’t come around every day. I am sure we will be hearing about Dane in the future. Our soccer program wishes him all the best.”
