Baseball Seizes State Baseball 3A Championship

Sandia Prep has clinched the 2021 New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) 3A State Championship baseball title.

Rising senior Isaac Nelson ’22 started things off for the Sundevils with a double down the right field line in the bottom of the third inning. Rising junior Sam Treme ’23 then hit a home run, giving the Sundevils a 2-1 lead over Robertson at the University of New Mexico’s Santa Ana Star Field. Treme also singled in the bottom of the fifth.

Recent graduate Isaac Horstman '21 pitched five strong innings, giving up only one run to earn the win. Rising senior Scott Charles '22 pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the save and seal the win.

Prep Head Coach Scott Brandt, in his first year at Prep, told the NMAA that because of COVID-19, it was a long haul for his players to reach this milestone, Prep’s first state title since 2016.

“A lot of things had to happen for all these young athletes to play this spring, and we’re very thankful,” he said. “These guys just got better each day. We have good senior leadership. These kids love playing with each other, they love practice. I’m just so thankful and proud of these young men."

The four seniors, now graduates, were: Isaac Horstman ’21, Jacob Nicholson ’21, Andrew Shoaff ’21, and  Gus Walker ’21.
