4 SPS Students Named National Merit Finalists

SPS seniors Amy Clement, Alex Clement, Jayson Lynch and Hannah Rabinowitz have been named as Finalists in the 53rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Alex Clement, immersed in a variety of activities at SPS, shows his willingness to be involved in the school. He is a member of the Supercomputing Challenge Team, Mock Trial, takes place in Math competitions, National Honor Society’s community service, JV soccer and piano.  In addition, he is a “Camping Associate”- a title given to those who have shown their leadership abilities and skills and gone through the necessary learning involved in leading younger students on outings and trips- in his favorite activity, Sandia Prep’s nationally accredited Outdoor Leadership Program. Interested in teaching someday, Alex already has a promising head start with his maturity and leadership skills. Alex plans on attending MIT in the fall.

Amy Clement is President of the Lion and Unicorn chapter of the National Honor Society, “Camping Associate,” and recipient of such awards as “Academic Awards for Excellence” and the “Headmaster’s Award.” She is highly involved in SPS academically and through community service. In addition to her dedication to the National Honor Society and other volunteer activities, Amy prepares for math competitions and the Supercomputing Challenge, at which Amy’s team won fourth place last year. The Outdoor Leadership Program is one the activities Amy is very passionate about, and which will take her far in life. Amy plans on attending Carleton College in the fall.

Jayson Lynch has participated every year in math competitions, ScienceBowl, Mock Trial, the Speech and Debate team and chess team. In addition, he has also been involved in the Supercomputing Challenge for which he has won several awards and has been in chorus since middle school, for which he has also received awards. Taking advantage of the wide variety of stimulating activities SPS has to offer, the experiences will benefit him.  He was named “Camping Associate” in the Outdoor Leadership Program. Last summer, he was selected to attend the Summer Science Program at New Mexico Tech. Jayson was also an active individual in a group that started “Coalition for a Sustainable Sandia Prep,” an organization that recycles trash and has given input for Sandia Prep’s new “green design” buildings. Jayson plans on attending MIT in the fall.

Hannah Rabinowitz, who is highly involved in her school and activities that are enriching her future, has received honors at SPS as well as outside of school. She was chosen as one of 50 students from Albuquerque for the Chamber of Commerce’s Youth Leadership Program. She was also the first New Mexican to receive a Bronfman Youth Fellowship.  At SPS, she was chosen as one of two speakers at the graduation ceremony.  She has served as the president of Prep’s chapter of the World Language Alliance for two years.  This group sponsors numerous programs for the school in the areas of language and culture.  Hannah is also part of SPS’s Model United Nations team and was given the Bill Richardson Diplomacy Award for her work on the team this year.  Hannah has also been involved in a variety of community service activities. Hannah plans on attending Washington University, St. Louis in the fall.
