ORGANIZATION OF THE TRIP

The members of the trip will be broken up into groups of 4-6.  Each group will be headed up by two upper classmen Camping Associates who have experience in camping, first aid and organizational skills. The groups will meet in the library during activity on Sept 6 and September 11 to get some basic tips on backpacking. The groups will meet again in the library during the two activity periods prior to their trip. During these meetings you will get to know your Camping Associates, plan your menu, work on a volunteer list and ask any questions you might have concerning the trip. If you miss any of these meetings, you can be dropped from the trip unless you have an excused absence.

PARENT NOTICE:

There is an ON CALL OLP FACULTY MEMBER for every trip. This person carries a pager and in case of a REAL EMERGENCY, can be contacted by either a member in the field or someone in Albuquerque. This pager number is 222-5421. Again, it should be noted that this number only be used in case of a real emergency. The OLP Faculty is prepared in case of a medical emergency. The Outdoor Leadership Program has site-specific emergency plans in place. On OLP Trips, there is a certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR) present who is trained to assess and treat most minor medical emergencies that might occur in the field. The OLP faculty carries prescription medications for pain, infections, and allergies with strict written protocols for their use. Under the direction of the school’s physician, the WFR trained personnel can administer these medications. If there are any recent changes in your child’s health since filling out the medical forms in August please indicate these changes on the last page. Also, we always need parents to go on these trips, so please call Larry Hanley. With your help we are able to keep the cost of these trips down and to take almost every student that wishes to go. Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

The return time to Prep on Sunday will vary because of travel time from these remote areas. Cruces Basin arrival time usually is around 6:00 PM, and for the Gila trips arrival time is around 8:00 PM. Participants will call home by cell phone about an hour before arrival time at school. Please see trip description.

IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE CALL LARRY HANLEY AT (H)344-5173, (S)338-3036

EQUIPMENT LIST

Below is a list of personal equipment you will need. It will be cool to warm during the day but cold in the evening. This list includes what you are wearing!

BRING EVERYTHING ON THIS LIST UNLESS IT SAYS “OPTIONAL”:

Backpack with lash straps (you can line the inside cavity of the pack with a plastic garbage bag for extra waterproofing)

Day pack  (light weight)

Sleeping bag with stuff sack  (line the stuff sack with a plastic garbage bag to waterproof)

Sleeping pad

Hiking boots  (ankle support is important! - these boots WILL get wet crossing the river)

Camp shoes  (something light weight to keep dry for evenings)

2 pair thin liner socks  (capilene, silk, or polypro)

2 pair heavy socks (wool or wool combination)

2 pair long pants  (lightweight, fast drying material is best, baggy enough to layer your thermal underwear underneath; don’t wear anything with buttons or snaps or metal grommets at hip level where the pack waist belt will grind them into your hip bones!)

Shorts (optional)

2 t-shirts or lightweight shirts

1 long-sleeved warmer shirt

2 pair underwear

1 set long underwear (capilene or polypro is warmer than cotton; these can double as pajamas if you keep them dry)

Warm jacket (keep this as light weight as possible; i.e. fleece or down are good, a heavy, lined wool coat too heavy)

Fleece or down vest or light weight sweater (optional, but if you get cold easily, a good idea)

Warm hat (that covers your ears)

Hat with brim (for sun protection, a baseball cap is fine)

Mittens or gloves

1 bandana  (can double as washcloth or towel)

Rain gear  (a poncho is fine; no need for expensive Gore-Tex unless you already have it!)

Pajamas (optional; can wear your long underwear)

2 liters of water (do not bring flimsy water bottles that will break in your pack)

Flashlight / extra batteries

Toilet kit with toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, tp, etc.

2 heavy-duty plastic trash bags large enough to go over your pack (these will be used to cover your pack if it rains or to carry out trash)

Snacks and energy food (optional; keep this minimal, remember you must carry it all on your back! You will have lunches planned with your CA's)

Personal first aid kit  (lip balm, sunscreen, insect repellent, etc.  Please include any personal medications you are taking)

Sunglasses

Personal dishes (cup, bowl and / or plate, spoon, fork - be sure these are unbreakable)

Whistle (for emergency use only and should be worn at all times)

OPTIONAL GEAR: Camera, small note pad and pencil, watch, compass, pocketknife

All this should take no more than 2/3 of your pack space. Remember - everyone must help carry the group gear and group food.
