Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Margaret Garcia de Duran at 12:07 p.m.
Review and Approval of Minutes: Cathy Taylor moved that the minutes of the April 27, 2009 General Meeting be approved. The motion was seconded by Linda Byrd and the motion was carried.
Outstanding Volunteer Award: An Outstanding Volunteer Award was given to Tamie Conlee by the Board of Trustees in recognition and appreciation of her 16 years as a Sandia Prep parent volunteer. Mike Dexter presented the award noting Tamie’s many contributions as secretary, vice-president, and president of the parent association; Supply Store organizer; and Booster Club founder. Tamie accepted the award and spoke of her many years as a Sandia Prep parent and how volunteering has given her more than she has given.
Mike Dexter reported that Margaret Garcia de Duran was given an Outstanding Volunteer Award at the last meeting of the Board of Trustees in recognition of her performance as president this year of both the SPSPA and the Booster Club and for the many hours she has spent organizing and expanding the concessions at athletic events.
Summer Prep: Tom Gentry-Funk reported that the Open House held Sunday, May 17 for Summer Prep was well attended with many new families coming to Summer Prep for the first time. There are currently 568 students signed up for Summer Prep, but there is still space available, and we are free to give Tom’s cell phone number to anyone we know who may be interested in Summer Prep.
Headmaster’s Comments: Of the 100 graduates in the class of 2009, 28 will be going to UNM, 49 will be going to other colleges in the southwest, 21 to colleges in the west, and 13 to colleges in the northeast. 52 of the graduates will be the only students from Prep at their school of choice. Merit scholarships for the class of 2009 total $980,000.
Senior Experiences among the class of 2009 were varied with 12 working in the medical field, 12 working in architecture or engineering, 9 working in the arts and theater fields, 10 working in education, 9 working in business, 6 in publishing, 6 in law and government, and 5 who studied or travelled overseas.
New faculty hires include: Steve Olson, a 2005 Prep graduate, who recently graduated from UNM and who will be teaching math, coaching, working in admissions, and advising the Middle School Civitan; Joelle Jones, a 2003 Prep graduate with a BA and a MA from UNM, who will be teaching sixth and seventh grade science; Margaret Showalter, a teacher formerly at Eldorado and at East Mountain Charter high schools, who will be teaching chemistry; and Julie Burns, a former teacher at Princeton Country Day School, who will be teaching Spanish.
Lynn Kozikowski will be returning from a leave of absence to head the Visual Arts Department. Laura Fitzpatrick will become the sixth grade coordinator and Brian Tregembo will become the seventh and eighth grade coordinator.
Ninety-five students from 41 different schools will be entering sixth grade here at Prep next year, so they will be divided into six sections. Grade 9 will have 13 new students. The total student body will remain stable at approximately 660 students. Financial aid is 20% higher than last year and tuition is 6% higher.
Treasurer’s Report: Linda Kier requested that any outstanding receipts for the year’s events be submitted. She has received the receipts from the 8th Grade Dinner Dance which came in $112 under budget. The proposed budget for the school year 2009-2010 is attached. The Executive Committee has proposed as a year-end gift of $10, 841 the purchase of benches and tables which will be placed near the new Performing Arts Center and in other spots around campus as needed. The total amount gifted to the school this year by the SPSPA is in excess of $17, 000.
Reports of Committees:
Supply Store: Andrea Levy reported that the committee will meet on Monday, August 10 for a coffee and to set up the back-to-school sale, including packaging the 6th grade survival bags. The sale will run as follows: Wednesday, August 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, August 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Friday, August 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Faculty Appreciation Luncheon: Laurie Hall reported that the RSVP sheet shows a good turnout. Rudy’s Barbecue will cater the main course and volunteers will provide sides of pasta salad, green salads, and desserts. The luncheon will be held underneath the tent the day after graduation.
Graduation Reception: This event, chaired by Cathy Dexter and Cheryl Passalaqua, is on schedule. Caterers will deliver sandwiches and cookies to be served along with punch under a tent after the ceremony.
Unfinished Business:
Grade-Level Get Togethers: Shawne Blackburn reported that parents have already been found to host the 12 grade get-together and the 7th grade get-together next fall. These get-togethers are generally held a couple of weeks before or after school starts. A small budget of $100 is allotted for each get-together.
Committee Evaluation Reports: Margaret Garcia de Duran reminded everyone to finish up committee evaluation reports and turn them in to her so that she can process them and report volunteer hours to Susan Walton.

Thanks-You’s:
Margaret extended thanks to Dick Heath saying she gained many insights watching him work and to Susan Walton for all her help and expertise concerning the history of the school. Margaret also thanked the committee chairs for their dedication to the many events sponsored by the SPSPA and for their hard work, which enabled all the gifts to the school this year. Margaret in turn was thanked by all present for all her multi-tasking this year as president of both the SPSPA and the Booster Club!
