Sandia Prep Names New Head of School
The Sandia Preparatory School Board of Trustees proudly announces the selection of Steven Albert as Sandia Prep’s next Head of School effective July 1, 2010. Albert will succeed Headmaster Dick Heath, who will retire in July after successfully leading the School since 1986.
Albert is currently Associate Head of School and Dean of Faculty at Hotchkiss School (Lakeville, Connecticut), where he has served as a teacher and administrator since 1993. Prior to his arrival at Hotchkiss, Albert taught at schools including Harvard University, Hartwick College and Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia. He has more than twenty years teaching experience at the secondary or college level.
Albert graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Physics with Honors from Haverford College. He holds a master’s in education from Harvard University as well as a master’s in physics from Portland State University.
The announcement of Albert as Sandia Prep’s next Head of School concludes a national search begun in January 2009 by the Sandia Prep search committee with the assistance of Educators’ Collaborative, a national firm specializing in independent school search consulting.

Albert will be the sixth Head of School in Sandia Prep’s 44-year history. Student Group Continues Cross-Cultural Partnership in Mexico
Led by SPS Spanish teachers Alicia Garcia and Dan DeLeón, a group of SPS students recently traveled near Tulum, Mexico. During their stay, the Sandia Prep students collaborated with same-age students at Colegio Puerto Aventuras, a bilingual school in Puerto Aventuras. They also visited ancient ruins and worked on a beach clean up project. This is the third such trip by Sandia Prep students.
Alumnus' Entry Chosen for International Solar Design Competition
SPS alumnus Roque Sanchez '05 is a key leader of the Rice University team whose entry was 1 of 20 from around the world selected to participate in the Solar Decathlon, a competition designed to prove that solar technology is a viable solution for homes in the future. The competition is composed of 10 different events, each focusing on one element of the house design. These areas include architecture, market viability and engineering, among others.
Rice's entry, the 15-by-50-foot ZEROW House constructed by a team of students and professors, will be judged by professionals in architecture and engineering during the event held October 8-21 at The National Mall in Washington D.C. Sanchez, an environmental engineering graduate student, estimates that approximately 150 students worked on the project over four years. Click here to view the Reuters news article.
