SPS Athletic Director Inducted Into Hall of Fame
Long-time Sandia Prep Athletic Director Pete MacFarlane was recently inducted into the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) Hall of Fame. Pete joined Sandia Prep in 1975 and has been active in NMAA for more than three decades. He has coached soccer and basketball and also coached Prep's varsity volleyball team for 25 years. NMAA recognized Pete both for his outstanding work at Sandia Prep over the last 31 years and for his efforts on behalf of students and athletics around the state.
NMAA Director Gary Tripp presided over the induction ceremonies, which were attended by members of Pete's family, Sandia Prep Headmaster Dick Heath, SPS colleagues and parents, representatives from Sandia Prep Athletic Boosters Club, and friends and colleagues from several other New Mexico schools.
Pete has established a diversified and highly successful athletic program at SPS. During his tenure, Sandia Prep's varsity teams have won 21 state championships, 18 regional titles, and 75 district titles. SPS has won 5 All Sports (Director's Cup) trophies as well. Yet according to Pete, "The championships are not the focus of our program. Rather, they're the additional result of our no-cut philosophy that emphasizes participation and opportunities for all students." As an example, last year, 431 of Sandia Prep's 645 students participated on 48 teams in 17 sports.
Congratulations, Pete, on this well-deserved honor!
