Your Student Visit
All prospective students spend a day visiting our School. Here’s some important information about your visit:

What will my day be like?
Most of your day as a visitor will be spent with your student host participating in classes, observing and meeting other students. You will also talk with a few teachers and enjoy a great lunch on us!

What should I wear?
You should wear comfortable, casual clothes. Jeans, t-shirts and sneakers are all acceptable.

Should I bring a lunch?
That’s not necessary; your lunch is on us. However, if you’d prefer, you’re welcome to pack your own lunch.

What is the purpose of my visit? Will I be observed?
Spending a day with us allows you to experience our School and helps you determine if Sandia Prep is the right place for you. While students and faculty will be interested in getting to know you, you will not be formally observed. Your only daylong contact will be with your student host; he or she will not be observing you. At some point you will sit down with a faculty member for an informal interview.

What time should I arrive? What time does the day end?

You should arrive by 8:40 a.m. and come to the Admission lobby. This will give you time to meet your student host and make your way to class. Your visit day will end at 3:00 p.m.

What grade will I be visiting?

If you are applying to attend 6th grade at Sandia Prep next year, you will visit 6th grade classes. If you are applying to other grades (7-12), you will visit classes in your current grade levels.

Who will be my student host? Can my friend be my host?

We’ll try to match you with a Sandia Prep student host with similar interests to yours. If you have a friend who attends SPS, we’ll try to match you with him/her provided s/he is available and is in the appropriate grade for your visit.

A Typical Day at Sandia Prep
As a 6th grader, you’ll have a total of 8 classes, but you’ll only attend 7 of your classes in a school day. The schedule at Sandia Prep rotates, so each day is a little different from the one before it. While it can be a bit tricky to follow at first, most students get the hang of it quickly. Plus, you’ll have a copy of your own schedule in case you forget which class comes next.

Sandia Prep’s schedule makes every day new and different. It allows plenty of time for academics, activities, and conversations with teachers. Best of all, it allows students to get to know each other and form the strong community for which Sandia Prep is known.

Sports Available to You at Sandia Prep

Sandia Prep has a special philosophy concerning sports. If a student attends practices, that student is able to play on a team. This unique “no-cut” policy allows SPS students to enjoy a wide range of athletic opportunities — and we’re proud to have earned numerous championship titles!

Competitive team play is offered at both middle and upper school levels in:
Soccer
Basketball
Volleyball
Baseball
Softball
Cross-country
Track
Tennis

In addition, upper school teams compete in:
Golf
Swimming
Bowling
Dance

Diversity
We celebrate diversity at SPS. Our faculty includes members from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Our students come from nearly 70 different schools and 41 different zip codes. Among our students, 39% identify themselves as students of color; this year’s 6th grade class is 44% diverse.

School Atmosphere
Sandia Prep is a great place to be a student. Our school atmosphere is informal and unpretentious. Here, learning is fun and our faculty is committed to helping you grow and excel.

"We’ve come to love Sandia Prep and its emphasis on developing the whole person in our son. If your child excels in academics, he will be challenged by Prep’s nationally recognized program — and allowed to accelerate when needed. She will also find a safe environment to try new things — and discover how fun the outdoors can be."
